Savanna was the first settlement in Carroll County to have a post office as Luther Bowen was the first postmaster when it opened in 1835. The post office had several locations during the early years but found a home on Main Street in 1888 after the N. Stebler Building was erected at 305 Main Street. It stayed there until 1915 when it moved one store north to the C.L. Howe Building.

In 1917, work began on the current building as digging the basement was done with horse teams and large scoops. The Post Office was opened April 1, 1918, and the first three mailmen at the new site were Walter Bahwell, Logan Machen and Ray Moore.
