Garbage & Recycling

The City of Savanna is contracted with REPUBLIC SERVICES for our trash and recycling curbside pick up program.  Questions regarding your pick up can be directed to Republic Services at 815.938.3602

City Hall can also assist with general questions and requests to start, stop or upgrade services by calling 815-273-2251.  

If you are being missed for pick ups, it is recommended that you SUBMIT ONLINE and your information will be quickly forwarded to Republic Services Dispatch.

GENERAL TRASH & RECYCLING PICKUP INFORMATION
Bins must be at the curb by 6:00 A.M. Pickup begins promptly at 6:00 A.M. The city is divided into two pick up areas with different pick up days, East and West Savanna. Recycling pickup is every other week. See REPUBLIC Calendar for Pickup Schedule.

All items must be kept in the approved designated bins.  No pick up is available for items left outside of bins or in bins not designated for use.  In order for pick up, items must fit bins with lids closed. If needed, new or additional bins are available for purchase by contacting City Hall.  Bins can also be upgraded in size from 65 gal. to 95 gal. for a charge.
Plastic grocery bags, styrofoam and blister packaging are NOT recyclable and should only be included in your trash.

UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS FOR CURBSIDE COLLECTION INCLUDE:

Tires, automotive batteries, un-drained oil filters, un-dried paint, free liquids of any kind, household chemicals, yard waste, items containing oil or fuel, medical waste, syringes, steel, appliances, construction and demolition materials.  Electronic items (regardless of size) are no longer accepted.

RECYCLING ITEMS (AND PREPERATION) INCLUDE:
1. METAL PRODUCTS
Tin & Aluminum Cans, formed containers, i.e. pie tins and foil products. Rinse completely and place lids inside of cans. Labels do not have to be removed.
2. GLASS PRODUCTS
Glass Jars & Bottles only: Rinse & remove lids. Labels do not have to be removed.
3. PLASTIC PRODUCTS
Plastic Jugs and bottles: Containers with the numbers 1 through 7 on the bottom. Including drink, food, laundry cleaning supply, oil and antifreeze containers. All containers must be completely empty with lids removed. Labels do not have to be removed.
4. NEWSPRINT PAPER: Bundle, place in the bottom of recycling bin or place in Brown Kraft Paper Bags in bins.
5. JUNK MAIL: Includes envelopes, fliers, brochures, bill stubs, advertisements in bills, old papers, all white and colored papers. Place in paper bag within recycling bin.
6. CORRUGATED (Cardboard Boxes): Break down and bundle to conserve space. Other cardboard: Food boxes such as cereal, baking goods, hamburger helper, macaroni, pasta type boxes, clothing boxes, shoe boxes, toy & game boxes, etc. Beverage cartons, i.e. 12 pack cases, 6 pack carriers, etc. Bundle or stack all items in a box to conserve space when needed and place in your recycling bin.

SPECIAL BULK PICK UP AND CHIRISTMAS TREE EVENTS
Republic Services offers two scheduled bulk pick up events each a year. After the Christmas Holiday, trees will also be accepted.  A special notice will be made for these pick up events.

OTHER DISPOSAL OPTIONS: There are other disposal opportunities available through Republic Services, including dumpster service.  Several bulk items can be delievered to the City Transfer Station on the available scheduled dates.  Also, there are occasional local solid waste and hazardous waste drop-off events through Jo-Carroll Solid Waste.  We will be updating the city website and facebook with notifications for disposal options for waste drop-off events in the area.
